Find a Freight Forwarder in Hawaii

Find a freight forwarder in Hawaii with our comprehensive listing. Although Hawaii’s export industry is small compared to the majority of states on the mainland, it serves as an important stop for cargo vessels and planes traveling enroute to Asia and Australia. It is the only state located in Oceania and an important link in the growing trans-Pacific trade partnership. Most of Hawaii’s logistics industry is focused on receiving imports and funneling freight traveling between Asia, North America and the South Pacific. Being a remote island state with limited manufacturing resources and high shipping costs makes it difficult for Hawaii to build a stronger export profile at home. Although Internet commerce is making it easier for local businesses to reach international markets, agriculture remains Hawaii’s primary source of income from domestic and international trade. Papaya, coffee, macadamia nuts, bottled water and prawns are the state’s biggest exports, followed by services in education and renewable energy.

One Major Trade Facility in Hawaii is the Maston Container Terminal.

Hawaii Port’s In Depth

The Hawaiian Islands have ten deep-sea ports. The ports handle about 17 million tons of cargo and serve as a shipping hub in the Pacific Rim. The ten-ports make up the Port Hawaii System.

Honolulu Harbor. The natural harbor is located on the island of Oahu. It serves as the center for intra-island transport. The port is located on the southern coast of the island and three miles from the Honolulu International Airport. It handles commercial, passenger, and fishing vessels.

Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor. This port is 19 miles southwest of Honolulu on Oahu. It functions as a transfer point among the islands and connects to 20 miles of highway for transport across the island.

Kewalo Basin. This artificial harbor was created from surrounding swamp land. It is a mile east of Honolulu and provides mooring to charter, excursion, and fishing boats entering the waters around Oahu.

Kahului Harbor. This port is the only commercial port on the island of Maui. It was important for the export of agricultural products especially sugar. Today, it serves as the hub for all cargo as well as passenger ships. It is located on the north shore of the island.

Kaunakakai Harbor. The harbor is 52 nautical miles from Honolulu on the southcentral shore of Molokai. It provides barge service for inter-island cargo as well as a ferry terminal.

Kaumalapau Harbor. The harbor on Lanai was initially used for transporting pineapple. It can accommodate inter-island barge traffic.

Hilo Harbor. Hilo Harbor is on the northeast coast of the island on Kuhio Bay. It handles passenger and international vessels. It also accommodates local sea traffic. The harbor is about one mile south of the Hilo International Airport.

Kawaihae Harbor. The harbor is the second deep-water port on the island of Hawaii. It is located on the northwest coast. It handles overseas and local cargo and supports the growing Western region of the state.

Nawiliwili Harbor.  The harbor is the primary port on Kauai. Located on the southeastern coast on Nawiliwili Bay. It is a commercial and inter-island port for containerized and general cargo.

Port Allen Harbor. The harbor is the second commercial port on Kauai. It is on the southern coast and handles liquid bulk – primarily – petroleum cargo.
