Facility Overview
Virginia International Gateway is a privately owned container terminal located on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia. The Virginia Port Authority operates the terminal that handles 1.2 million TEUs per year. It occupies 576 acres and includes a US Customs Port of Entry. A re-engineering project completed in 2019 doubled the terminal’s capacity to 480,000 lifts per year. The new terminal can accommodate up to three ultra-large container vessels (ULCV) along its 4,000 linear feet of berth capacity. The navigation channel has a depth of 50 feet. The terminal has 12 super post-Panamax cranes for large container vessels. The on-dock yard has almost 20,000 linear feet of railway tracks.
