Facility Overview
Union Pier is located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The terminal is currently used for breakbulk cargo and cruise ships. The Port of South Carolina will not renew its lease with Carnival Cruise Line in 2024. It will maintain a cruise terminal for port-of-call only. The remainder of Union Pier’s 70 acres will be converted into a mixed-use neighborhood. The downtown area is an historic district that conservationists believe is being damaged by the pollution associated with large cruise ships and cargo vessels. The terminal has 2,470 linear feet of berthing space with an alongside water depth of 35 feet.
