Norfolk Southern’s Atlanta-based intermodal terminal is located 17 miles northwest of Atlanta in the town of Austell. It’s being reconfigured to increase capacity and reduce the pressure on the ports of Charleston, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville and Miami, Florida. When the project is complete, the lift capacity will increase to 650,000 per year. The 450-acre facility will be able to stack 2400 containers. The reconfigured facility will have 20,000 feet of unloading track and 26,000 feet of supporting track. There will be 3,000 parking slots for 53-foot trailers.
